Thanks Kate and Adrienne for sharing these great templates!
Hi everyone, I hope you all enjoyed the term break! For my first week of EMU investigations this term I used the story book ‘One Is a Snail, Ten Is a Crab’ by April Pulley Sayre. The book is a counting by feet story and can be used as a springboard for many different investigations. The children enjoyed reading the story and predicting which animals might make the next number. We also used the book as a basis for counting by 2 and 10.
I posed the following questions for investigation:

I also found some animal cards online. I copied a set onto cards and the children chose 2 or more cards. They were then challenged to find the total number of feet, explaining their addition strategies to the group, drawing and writing the number sentence. The children found the bead strings helped them to explain their addition strategies.
I would love to hear about some of the story books you have used!

For the investigation part of the EMU session we explored a couple of ladybird scenarios. The children had a ladybird template and counters to help them find solutions. They seemed to like the ladybird idea, butterflies could work well too!
The EMU group made bead kebabs and we used them to model numbers in our counting session. The children then took their kebab home with instructions for the activity to practise with their parents.
Hi everyone. I have shared the note I sent home before starting the EMU program and a letter I sent home during the first week. Hope they are useful!
